The William B. Mayo records series consists of three subseries: the Power Plant Engineering records subseries, 1912-1927 (0.8 cubic ft.), Acc. 620, which contains correspondence, reports, blueprints and design drawings, and some photographs of various power generating operations at Ford facilities including Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Railroad, Highland Park powerhouse, Rouge River plant powerhouse, and various Village Industry plants; the Ships Salvage Program records subseries, 1916-1929 (4.8 cubic ft), Acc. 37, 262, 263, 264; and Stout Metal Airplane Division records subseries, 1920-1932 (73.6 cubic ft.), Acc. 18, 251, 383.

William Benson Mayo was born in Chatham, Massachusetts in January 1860. After attending public schools, Mayo moved to Boston and worked in a variety of jobs until accepting a low-level office position with the noted steam engine manufacturers Hooven-Owens-Rentschler Company. Rising to vice president of the company, Mayo met Henry Ford during negotiations and design meetings for the installation of nine massive steam-gas power generators at Ford's Highland Park plant.
